About Trenton, NJ
Trenton is the capital city of the state of New Jersey and the county seat of Mercer County. The earliest references to Trenton date back to 1719, with boundaries for Trenton Township officially recorded in 1720. The community was originally called “Trent-towne”, derived from William Trent, one of the largest local landowners. During the Revolutionary War, Trenton was the site of the Battle of Trenton, George Washington’s first military victory, punctuated by the famous Christmas nighttime crossing of the Delaware River to defeat Hessian troops garrisoned in the city. Trenton became New Jersey’s capital in 1790, with the city of Trenton formed inside Trenton Township in 1792. Eventually, the remaining portions of the township were reincorporated back into the city of Trenton in 1837. The city steadily grew into its urban character throughout the 19th century, as European immigrants came to work in Trenton’s bustling manufacturing industries.
Frequently Asked Questions about Criminal Defense in Trenton, NJ
It is highly advisable that you first speak with an experienced criminal defense attorney before choosing to speak to the police. You have the right to remain silent in the face of questioning by police officers and to speak to an attorney before police can engage in questioning. Even though you may think that you can clear up any trouble by speaking to the police, remember that law enforcement officers are trained, experienced interrogators. An attorney can help you decide if you may be able to help your case by speaking to police and can ensure that your rights and interests are protected while you are speaking to the police.
Although you are not required to have an attorney to plead guilty, you should definitely speak to an attorney before deciding to plead guilty. Even if you are being offered a plea deal or leniency in exchange for pleading guilty, an attorney can review any plea offer the police have made to you to determine if such an offer is in your best interest, or if you may be able to secure a better deal through negotiation, or even if you may be better off fighting your charges.
