3 Teens Will Be Charged With Trying to Kill Trenton Officers During Chase that Injured 6 Cops, 1 Critically

Police officers take on a lot of risks when on the job. When keeping the streets safe, they are often exposed to weapons and criminal behaviors. That is what happened during a vehicle chase in Trenton, New Jersey, on July 29, 2020. Trenton police officers engaged in a vehicle chase when tracking down a stolen vehicle. The local police department had received a tip of a social media post that included images of the defendants driving around, flaunting firearms.

The defendants, three teenagers, shot at the police officers during the chase, before eventually crashing into two police vehicles. The chase occurred late into the night and when through two nearby cities. The suspects were eventually detained after crashing into the police officers on the North Clinton and North Olden intersection.

In total, the six responding police officers were injured, with three of them taken in for medical services at the local hospital. One police officer remains in critical condition. The three defendants were also injured in the vehicle crash, two of which were taken to the hospital and one who was released into police custody.

Following the detainment, officers were able to recover three firearms. New Jersey has taken a strict stance on illegal firearms in recent years. Including this situation, police have recovered a total of 104 illegal firearms this year alone.

New Jersey’s Firearm Laws

New Jersey has the second toughest gun laws in the United States. The majority of illegal firearm crimes that are committed in New Jersey occur with guns that come from out of state.

These are just a few of New Jersey’s firearm laws:

  • Individuals under the age of 18 cannot purchase, possess, or fire a firearm. Individuals under the age of 21 cannot purchase, possess, or fire a firearm unless their job requires it.
  • Individuals will need a firearm purchased ID card and a local police chief permit to buy a handgun in New Jersey. This application process requires careful questioning and references.
  • Individuals with previous convictions, or who are on the terror watch list, cannot buy or possess a firearm.
  • Former and current law officials will need to apply for a firearm permit before carrying one legally in New Jersey.
